For the fourth consecutive quarter, earnings and transactions recorded their highest figures to date.
Electronic commerce in Spain breaks own record

Electronic commerce in Spain reached €1.67 billion in sales during the first quarter of this year. This is the highest revenue figure to date, following a 34.75% increase compared to the same quarter the year before. The positive performance of e-commerce also led to a new record in the number of transaction, with a total of 23.55 million, according to the latest quarterly report on Electronic Commerce by the Spanish Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT).


The amount of online transactions, which was 56.17% greater than in the same quarter the year before, confirmed the step forward between October and December 2009, when 22.11 million transactions were recorded.


Revenue was concentrated once again in transactions related to the tourism sector, which covered 29.8% of the total business volume: €497.64 million. This includes air travel (14.9%), travel agencies and tour operators (8.2%) and ground transportation for travelers (6.7%).


Direct marketing, which held second place in terms of sales since the second quarter of last year, is now in third place with €125.24 million. Gambling and betting, meanwhile, dropped from third to fifth place with €105.2 million. Both types of activity represent the largest number of online transactions.


Foreign business on Spanish sites increased by 1.6% compared to the same period the year before
. Foreigners bought goods and services on Spanish Internet sites for a total value of €175.97 million. These transactions on Spanish sites, together with those originating in Spain on Spanish sites, represented 53.3% of the total business volume (10.5% foreign; 42.8% internal) during the first quarter of 2010, with €891.2 million. The real push came from purchases made by Spaniards from Spanish shops, which increased by 58.46% to €715.23 million. Meanwhile, transactions originating in Spain with international destinations represented 46.6% of the revenue: €778.73 million.


The European Union and the United States were the geographic areas that bought the most goods from Spanish electronic vendors. Europeans spent €136.8 million (77.7% of the total foreign volume), while Americans spent €13.6 million (7.7%). The EU continued to be the preferred destination for Spanish buyers, with a volume of €685.5 million (88% of the Spanish expenditure abroad), followed by the USA, with €47.9 million (6.1%).
