What is an e-marketplace?

On an e-marketplace several companies can meet on a common platform to do business. On some e-marketplaces companies find new customers or suppliers. Other e-marketplaces can make the order process between buyers and seller more efficient.

It is a business-to-business e-marketplace, according to our definition, if:

  • it is open to several buyers and several sellers
  • the provider of the service does not set the price, nor sell or buy goods or services traded on the platform
  • it has at least one trading function like request-for-quote, auction or catalogue with online-order
  • it has a focus on business to business or business to government

Why should our company use an e-market place?

You can use e-marketplaces to market your company and find new business partners. E-marketplaces can remove time and space limitations, as trade is possible 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. They can give companies better market information, provided that a sufficient number of buyers and sellers are active.

Using e-marketplaces for international trade as a buyer or seller you can get one or several of the following advantages:

  1. Get market information: find information about the industry in the e-marketplace?s geographic region. You may find competitors and potential customers.
  2. Market your products: You can register to make potential customers and distributors find you and ask for quotations.
  3. Make transactions efficient: large buyers can administer purchases from many suppliers on e-marketplaces with a focus on efficient transactions. Availability, prices, stocks, delivery times and payment terms of products can be shown. Suppliers often have to be invited, and can then use the platform to reach other buyers.
  4. Source for new suppliers. You can get information on many potential suppliers and negotiate in an efficient way. Some e-marketplaces offer sourcing services, making it easier to find, evaluate and negotiate new contracts.

eMarket Services

eMarket Services is a not for profit project, funded by the trade promotion organisations of Canada, Ireland, Norway, Spain and  The Netherlands. Staff from these organisations cooperates around the world to produce our services and exchange knowledge on electronic marketplaces.

As of January 1. 2004 the EU Commission came in to the project as a co-sponsor for a period of 2 years. eMarket Services is now the official European portal for information on e-marketplaces. With a growing network of National Contact Points, we strive to make it possible for companies in all EU member states to get answers to in your own language.
